Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Mental health is a critical aspect of public health, yet it remains underrepresented in discussions within many rural communities. In Fufore Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State, the use of digital media platforms has gained traction in raising awareness about mental health issues. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp groups have been leveraged by health professionals, NGOs, and local government officials to share information on mental health, reduce stigma, and encourage individuals to seek help. However, despite the potential of digital media to drive change in public attitudes towards mental health, it remains unclear how these platforms are specifically influencing public awareness in Fufore. This study aims to examine the role of digital media in shaping public perceptions of mental health and enhancing awareness of mental health services in Fufore LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Fufore LGA, mental health issues are often stigmatized, and there is a lack of awareness about available services. Although digital media holds promise in promoting mental health awareness, there is limited research on its actual impact within this region. This study will investigate how digital media is being utilized to increase public awareness of mental health, its influence on reducing stigma, and the effectiveness of these platforms in encouraging individuals to seek help.
